What Is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)? And Why AEO vs SEO Is the Wrong Fight

Google now answers a large share of searches itself, in an AI Overview that sits above every ranking you have ever earned. Answer engine optimization is the discipline of getting into that answer. Here is what AEO covers, how it differs from SEO and GEO, and the playbook for winning answer surfaces.

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of getting your content selected for answer surfaces: Google AI Overviews, featured snippets, and the answer boxes that resolve a query before anyone clicks a result. SEO gets you ranked on the page. AEO gets you into the answer that sits above the page, increasingly the only thing a searcher reads.

The distinction matters because the answer box is not awarded to the #1 ranking by default. It is assembled from sources an engine judges extractable and trustworthy, and those are different tests than the ones rankings measure.

Terms in this piece

Where answers actually appear

Three surfaces do most of the answering today. Google AI Overviews, the AI-written summary that now tops a large and growing share of searches, including the majority of question-type queries in many categories, and pushes the first organic result below the fold. Featured snippets, the older extract-a-paragraph answer box that still owns a large share of question queries. And AI assistants like ChatGPT and Gemini, which are technically the territory of GEO but overlap wherever an assistant retrieves live pages before answering.

The common property: each surface quotes a small number of sources, often one to five, where a results page listed ten. Answer surfaces concentrate visibility; there is much less room, and the room goes to whoever packaged the answer best.

Demand for the discipline reflects that squeeze. Google Ads data (US, July 2026) shows 2,400 monthly searches for "answer engine optimization" and another 1,600 for "aeo vs seo", the comparison this piece exists to answer.

The evidence: what an AI Overview does to clicks

The reason AEO exists is measurable, and the numbers are stark. In a 2025 study, Pew Research Center tracked the real browsing behaviour of 900 US adults and found that when a Google results page carried an AI summary, people clicked a traditional link just 8% of the time, against 15% on pages without one. Clicks on the sources cited inside the summary were rarer still, roughly 1% of visits. And users were more likely to abandon the search entirely after seeing an AI summary, on 26% of those pages versus 16% of ordinary results pages.

Read those three numbers together and the strategy writes itself. The click is collapsing, but the small share that survives goes to the sources the answer names. If you are not one of them, an AI Overview does not merely outrank you, it ends the search before your link is ever seen.

This is not a fringe surface either. Gartner has forecast that traditional search volume will fall 25% by 2026 as answer engines and assistants absorb queries that used to end in a click. AEO is the discipline of staying visible through that shift, on the surface with the most search volume behind it.

AEO vs SEO: same inputs, different finish line

The honest framing is not AEO versus SEO as rivals. AEO sits on top of SEO: you generally need to rank somewhere in the retrieval set to be considered for the answer, and then a different set of signals decides whether you are quoted.

What each discipline optimises for

SEO: rank a page in the results list60%
AEO: get quoted inside the answer box85%
GEO: get named by generative assistants80%

Bars indicate where visibility concentrates as answer surfaces absorb clicks, not traffic share. The finish line moves from the list to the answer.

Concretely, the tests diverge like this. Rankings reward domain authority, links, and relevance across a whole page. Answer selection additionally rewards extractability: a passage that states the answer completely in two or three sentences, under a heading that matches the question, on a page whose structure a machine can parse without guessing. A #3 ranking with a clean, quotable answer block routinely beats a #1 ranking with the answer buried in paragraph twelve.

AEO vs GEO: siblings, not synonyms

AEO and GEO are often used interchangeably. They should not be. AEO targets retrieval-time surfaces: the engine fetches live pages and quotes them, so your own content and its structure are the primary lever, and changes can land within weeks. GEO targets generation-time answers: assistants lean on training data and entity associations, so third-party citations and reputation do more of the work, and changes compound over months.

The evidence that they are different games is empirical, not theoretical. When we ran a major SEO brand through every engine on the same day with the same queries, it scored 95% visibility on ChatGPT and 44% on Google AI Overview, a 51-point gap between the GEO side and the AEO side of the same brand.

Most monitoring tools track the chatbots and stop there. That leaves the answer box, the surface with the largest search volume behind it, unmeasured, which is the first thing to check when choosing answer engine optimization software. We score AI Overviews from real sampled Google results precisely because the chatbot number tells you nothing about it.

How Google AI Overviews choose their sources

Google has published the outline and the observable behaviour fills in the rest. The AI Overview model works from the retrieval set, roughly the pages that rank, then selects passages that answer the query directly, hold up out of context, and come from pages whose structure it can trust. In practice, five properties separate quoted pages from skipped ones (for the step-by-step version, see how to appear in Google AI Overviews):

  • The passage answers the question in the first two sentences under a heading phrased like the question.
  • The page carries schema that declares what it is: FAQ, HowTo, Article, Organization.
  • Claims are specific and attributable, numbers, names, and dates rather than generalities.
  • The page is fresh enough for the topic, with a visible updated date.
  • The site resolves to a clear entity with corroborating off-site presence.

These are the same four citability signals we measured in our citation research, applied to one surface. Google AI Overview cites sources at roughly three times the quality of the conversational models, which makes AEO the fastest place to see structural work pay off.

A worked example: who gets into the answer

Picture a buyer asking "what is the best time-tracking tool for agencies". An AI Overview resolves that in roughly three moves, and watching them makes the playbook concrete.

First, retrieval. The engine pulls the pages that rank for the query and its close variants, perhaps fifteen to twenty candidates. If your page is not in that set, nothing that follows can help you. That is the SEO floor AEO stands on.

Second, extraction. From those candidates the model looks for passages that answer the question directly and hold up out of context. A page whose heading reads "Best time-tracking tools for agencies" followed by a two-sentence verdict is trivially quotable. A page that answers the same question inside a 400-word narrative is not, even when it ranks higher.

Third, corroboration. The model prefers claims it can see echoed across independent sources, from a publisher it can resolve to a clear entity. A specific figure on a page carrying Organization schema and a matching Knowledge Panel is likelier to be lifted than an unattributed generality on an anonymous page.

The brand that wins this query is rarely the one with the most content. It is the one whose answer was easiest to quote and safest to trust. Every move in the playbook below is a way to become that brand.

If AEO feels familiar, that is because you have optimised for an answer box before. Featured snippets, the extract-a-paragraph result Google introduced years ago, are the direct ancestor of the AI Overview. Both reward the same thing: a page that answers the question cleanly enough to be lifted out and shown on its own.

The difference is generative assembly. A featured snippet quotes one source verbatim. An AI Overview synthesises several sources into new prose and names the ones it leaned on. That shifts the target in two ways. Being the single best passage is no longer the whole game; being one of several quotable, non-redundant sources is. And the answer can draw on a page ranked fifth or eighth, not just the top result, because the model is selecting passages, not positions.

The reassuring part is that the structural work which won snippets also wins Overviews. A clean two-sentence answer under a question-shaped heading is quotable to both, so optimising for one lifts the other. AEO is less a new skill than an old one aimed at a higher-stakes target.

The schema that makes a page machine-readable

Structured data is the cheapest AEO lever because it removes any guesswork about what a page is. Two schema types carry most of the load for answer surfaces. An FAQ page should declare its questions and answers so an engine can map them straight to a query:

{
  "@context": "https://schema.org",
  "@type": "FAQPage",
  "mainEntity": [{
    "@type": "Question",
    "name": "What is answer engine optimization?",
    "acceptedAnswer": {
      "@type": "Answer",
      "text": "Answer engine optimization is the practice of structuring content so answer surfaces select and quote it."
    }
  }]
}

A step-by-step page should use HowTo, and every article should carry Article and Organization markup so the engine can resolve who published it. None of this changes what a human reads. It is machine-readable proof of what each page is, it costs nothing, and this very post ships the FAQ markup above on its own questions.

The AEO playbook

Framework

Five moves that win answer surfaces

1. Restructure your top pages answer-first. Every commercial page opens with a two-sentence answer to the question it targets, then expands. If quoting the first paragraph alone would misrepresent the page, rewrite the first paragraph.

2. Phrase headings as questions. H2s that match how buyers actually ask ("what does X cost", "X vs Y, which is better") map your content to queries an answer engine is trying to resolve.

3. Ship schema everywhere it is true. FAQ, HowTo, Article, and Organization markup. It is machine-readable proof of what each page is, and it is free.

4. Build genuine comparison and FAQ pages. Answer surfaces love direct questions with direct answers. Honest "vs" pages and real FAQs are quoted far more than brand storytelling.

5. Measure the answer box itself. Track whether AI Overviews appear for your money queries, who gets cited in them, and whether that includes you. Rankings alone no longer report this.

None of this replaces SEO fundamentals; it redirects them. The site still needs to rank to be retrieved. What changes is what you do with the ranking once you have it.

Which queries to target first

You cannot optimise every query for the answer box at once, so sequence by where the surface is both present and winnable. Three filters put the right queries at the top of the list.

Does an AI Overview already appear? Run your money queries and note which ones trigger an Overview today. Those are live battlegrounds; queries with no Overview are still ordinary SEO. Start where the surface actually exists.

Is it a question, comparison, or definition? Answer surfaces fire most often on informational and comparison intent: "what is X", "X vs Y", "best X for Y", "how to X". These map cleanly onto answer-first pages and question-shaped headings, so they are the fastest to win.

Do you already rank in the retrieval set? Because Overviews are assembled from ranking pages, a query where you sit on page one but are not cited is the highest-return fix on the board. You have already paid the SEO cost; you are simply not packaged to be quoted. Rewrite the intro answer-first, add schema, and you convert an existing ranking into a citation.

Work that shortlist first and AEO stops being an abstract initiative. It becomes a concrete list of pages to restructure, ordered by the return each one will show.

Where AEO efforts stall

Three mistakes account for most AEO disappointment, and each ignores something the mechanism already made clear.

Framework

The failure modes to avoid

Chasing the answer box without ranking. AI Overviews are assembled from the retrieval set, so a page that ranks nowhere for the query is not eligible to be quoted, however clean its formatting. AEO sits on top of SEO, not instead of it.

Burying the answer. A page that opens with brand storytelling and reaches the real answer in paragraph twelve gives the engine nothing liftable near the top. The answer has to be extractable in the first two sentences.

Skipping measurement. Teams add schema and answer-first intros, then never check whether Overviews actually appear for their money queries or who gets cited when they do. Without that feedback loop, you are optimising blind.

How long AEO takes to work

AEO rewards patience less than GEO does, which is part of its appeal. Because Google AI Overviews are rebuilt from live-ranked pages on each query, structural changes reach the surface as soon as a page is recrawled and reindexed, often within days to a few weeks rather than months. Add a clean answer-first intro and FAQ schema to a page that already ranks, and it can start appearing in Overviews on the next crawl cycle.

Two things still gate the speed. The page has to rank in the retrieval set first, so a brand-new URL with no authority will not shortcut the SEO timeline no matter how well formatted it is. And the Overview's source selection shifts with the retrieval set, so a citation you win can be displaced when a competitor improves or Google re-samples. That is not a reason to treat AEO as one-and-done; it is the reason to measure continuously.

The honest expectation: pages that already rank and get restructured are the quick wins, measurable in weeks. Winning answer surfaces for queries you do not yet rank for is the slow track, gated by the same authority work as classic SEO. Sequencing the fast wins first, as the query filters above do, is what makes an AEO program show returns early enough to keep its budget.

Measuring AEO

An AEO scoreboard answers three questions per money query: does an AI Overview (or snippet) appear, which sources does it cite, and are you one of them? Multiply across your query set and you get an answer-surface share number that behaves like share of voice. We measure it with sampled live Google results rather than simulations, because the Overview's source selection changes with the retrieval set, and fold it into the AEO side of the GEO score.

Log four things every cycle and the scoreboard turns into a plan. Overview presence, the share of your money queries that trigger an answer box at all, tells you how much of your category has moved to the new surface. Your citation rate, the share of those Overviews that name you, is the headline number to move. Competitor citation rate on the same queries shows who is winning the passages you want. And the cited-source list itself is a gift: it names the exact third-party pages Google trusts for your category, which is your shortlist of where to earn a mention next. Re-sample on a fixed cadence, because an Overview you win can be re-assembled the moment a rival improves. A single snapshot flatters or scares you; the trend line is what you manage against.

FAQ

What is answer engine optimization? Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring content so answer surfaces, Google AI Overviews, featured snippets, and retrieval-backed AI assistants, select and quote it when they resolve a query, rather than only ranking it in a list of results.

What is the difference between AEO and SEO? SEO earns a position in the ranked results; AEO earns selection into the answer that sits above them. AEO builds on SEO, you usually need to rank to be considered, but adds extractability tests: answer-first passages, question-shaped headings, and schema that make content quotable.

What is the difference between AEO and GEO? AEO targets retrieval-time answer surfaces where your own content and structure are the main lever and results can land in weeks. GEO targets generative assistants whose answers lean on training data, where third-party citations and entity strength dominate and gains compound over months. A brand can score very differently on each.

How do I show up in Google AI Overviews? Rank in the retrieval set for the query, then make your page the easiest to quote: open with a direct two-sentence answer under a question-phrased heading, mark the page up with schema, keep it fresh, and back claims with specifics. Then verify by measuring which sources the Overview actually cites for your queries.

Do featured snippets still matter? Yes. They remain a high-volume answer surface, and the same structural work that wins AI Overviews wins snippets. Optimising for one generally improves the other.

Do AI Overviews actually reduce clicks? Yes, measurably. A 2025 Pew Research Center study found that people clicked a traditional search link only 8% of the time when an AI summary was present, versus 15% without one, and just 1% of visits led to a click on a source cited inside the summary. Being named in the answer is now the visibility, not a bonus on top of it.

Is AEO worth it if my pages already rank well? Often it is the highest-return work you can do, because ranking is now the entry ticket rather than the prize. If an AI Overview appears for your query and cites competitors, your #1 position sits below an answer most searchers never scroll past. AEO converts existing rankings into citations inside the answer, which is where the surviving attention goes.
