Ahrefs AI Visibility Report 2026: A 51-Point Gap Hiding Inside a Strong Score

We ran Ahrefs, the SEO industry's own gold standard, through every major AI engine. It scores 95% on ChatGPT and 44% on Google AI Overview. The spread, not the average, is the story every MarTech brand should study.

There is a particular irony in auditing the AI search visibility of Ahrefs, a company whose entire product exists to help others understand their search performance. So we did to Ahrefs what Ahrefs does to everyone else: measured it rigorously, benchmarked it against its real competitive set, and refused to let a flattering headline number stand in for the diagnosis.

The headline is genuinely strong. The diagnosis underneath it is more instructive and more transferable to every MarTech brand, than the score alone would suggest.

How we scored Ahrefs

Method, briefly

We ran Ahrefs through the YouGotRanked platform: over 100 queries spanning recommendation, pricing, regional-discovery, and head-to-head comparison intents, including the organic, brand-anchored, and comparison variants our engine fans out behind the scenes, executed across four engines: ChatGPT (OpenAI), Claude (Anthropic), Gemini (Google), and Google AI Overview. The competitive set the models were asked to reason over: SEMrush, Moz, SpyFu, Majestic, Serpstat, BrightEdge, Conductor, and Searchmetrics. Every number below comes from actual model responses, scored on our GEO methodology.

The headline: a strong, uneven brand

At the composite level, Ahrefs is a clear category leader. A GEO Score of 83.9 reflects a brand that AI engines know well, describe favourably, and position at or near the top of the field.

Three of the four dimensions are excellent. Entity presence of 86.5% means Ahrefs shows up nearly everywhere it should. Rank strength of 92 means that when it shows up, it shows up near the top. Sentiment of 90 means the framing is consistently favourable. The outlier, highlighted, is share of voice at 35.1%, and that is where the competitive story lives.

The finding that matters: a 51-point provider spread

A single blended score would have told you Ahrefs is doing well and sent you home. The provider-level view tells you where the brand is quietly exposed.

Exhibit 2

Ahrefs visibility by AI engine: same brand, same day, same queries

Ninety-five on ChatGPT is about as good as it gets, Ahrefs is named first in nearly every relevant prompt, described as "renowned for its comprehensive backlink analysis" and "the industry standard." Forty-four on Google AI Overview is a different story, and a consequential one.

Here is why the AI Overview number is the one to worry about, not the ChatGPT number to celebrate: Google AI Overview now renders above the organic results Ahrefs has dominated for a decade. On the exact commercial queries where Ahrefs has historically owned the click, an AI-generated summary now answers first and in that summary, Ahrefs appears roughly half the time, in second position, behind SEMrush. The brand is strongest where it was already strong and weakest on the surface that is displacing its historical moat. The average hides that. The spread reveals it. Closing that gap is a matter of winning AI Overview citations for commercial keywords — the exact queries where the click still has value.

The competitive picture: SEMrush is winning the room

Visibility is relative. The number that should focus the mind at Ahrefs is not its own score but the gap to the brand beating it.

Moz12.6%
BrightEdge2.2%

SEMrush captures 46.3% of category mentions to Ahrefs' 35.1%, an eleven-point lead, despite Ahrefs' widely acknowledged edge in backlink data quality. The gap widens specifically on Claude, where SEMrush holds the #1 position across nearly all queries while Ahrefs sits second. The most plausible read: SEMrush's broader feature surface and heavier content-marketing footprint are simply better represented in the training corpora, and the models reward that breadth of coverage.

Overall visibility score: full competitive set

Note the shape of this distribution, it is the "short-head" dynamic in the wild. Two brands (SEMrush, Ahrefs) absorb the overwhelming majority of AI visibility; everyone from Moz down is fighting over scraps. In AI answers, the middle of the market does not get a menu slot. This is the concentration effect that makes AI visibility a winner-takes-most game, and it is why the SEMrush–Ahrefs gap is worth closing rather than shrugging off.

What the models actually say

The qualitative layer is as revealing as the quantitative. Across the full query set, the engines describe Ahrefs with remarkable consistency:

"renowned for its comprehensive backlink analysis" · "the most accurate backlink index" · "the industry standard for SEO" · "the preferred choice for research-heavy, link-building strategies"

That consistency is a genuine GEO asset, a clean, stable entity representation. But read it again and the constraint appears: Ahrefs is described almost entirely through its backlink and keyword-research heritage. As the product has expanded into site auditing, content explorer, rank tracking, and reporting, the models have not kept pace. They still position Ahrefs as the backlink tool it was, not the broader marketing-intelligence platform it has become.

This is the training-lag problem in miniature. Ahrefs' entity is clear but dated, anchored to a narrower value proposition than the current product warrants. Closing that gap is not a messaging fix on the website; it requires sustained, citation-grade coverage of the full product surface across the sources models actually learn from. The four signals that make content citable break down how to engineer that coverage.

What we would do about it

Reading the data as an operator, three moves carry the most leverage, in priority order.

Framework

Ahrefs GEO priorities: from the data

1. Attack the Google AI Overview gap first. It is the fastest-growing surface and the one displacing Ahrefs' organic moat. AI Overview rewards substantive, well-sourced comparison content and authoritative third-party citations. Ahrefs' existing "vs" pages are feature tables; they need to become genuine, cited, narrative comparisons.

2. Broaden the entity beyond backlinks. The models describe a 2018 Ahrefs. Earning citation-grade coverage of site audit, content explorer, and rank tracking, in the roundups and review platforms models weight, gradually updates the representation for the next training cycle.

3. Close the share-of-voice gap to SEMrush on Claude. The eleven-point category deficit is concentrated on specific providers. Provider-level targeting, not blanket content, is the efficient path.

None of these are quick. That is precisely the point of measuring early: GEO moves on training cycles, so the brand that starts closing a gap this quarter is building an advantage that compounds into the model versions its competitors will be fighting inside of two years from now.

The transferable lesson

Ahrefs is not struggling. An 83.9 GEO Score and 95% ChatGPT visibility are results most brands would trade a quarter's budget for. But even for one of the most authoritative names in its category, a single blended number concealed a 51-point provider spread and an eleven-point share-of-voice deficit to its chief rival.

For the typical brand, lower authority, thinner mention coverage, no entity discipline, the gaps are wider and the blind spots larger. And unlike Ahrefs, many discover they have near-zero presence on one engine while a slightly weaker competitor quietly captures all of the AI-referred demand.

The lesson is not "Ahrefs has a problem." It is "the average lies, and you cannot manage what you have not measured across every engine."
